Welcome to the University Aspirations page
Funded by the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment
and Workplace Relations
In December 2008, the University of South Australia was awarded a grant by
the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR)
under the Diversity and Structural Adjustment Fund. In this project, UniSA
will work with schools in northern Adelaide to raise educational
aspirations, tertiary participation and social inclusion.
Working in collaboration with schools and the
South Australian Department of Education and Children's Services (DECS),
Northern Futures and other partners, the project will focus on identifying
the most effective ways for:
-
encouraging students in northern Adelaide and their families to consider university as a realistic education option
-
informing students and their families about the range of rewarding career and professional opportunities that a university qualification can provide
-
providing engaging and practical learning experiences that will encourage students to continue their studies in secondary school and higher education. Science and mathematics will be a particular focus of new and revised curriculum the University, educationalists and practitioners will develop for use by schools and the University
-
show-casing career opportunities particularly in engineering and the professions relevant to northern Adelaide industries.
-
delivering effective pathways for students to access university
The project will be informed by the latest research. The findings will be available for other universities and communities in Australia and will identify key strategies for helping more Australians participate in post-secondary education. Greater participation in university and other tertiary/post-secondary education is a priority of the Australian Government and a goal of the South Australian Government in the SA Strategic Plan.
By identifying ways to help young people continue at school and in further
education, the project will help to ensure young people are ready to take
advantage of the new job opportunities in northern Adelaide. Studies show
that more than half of the jobs created there between 2006 and 2016 will
require a post-school qualification, and up to 60% of these new jobs will
require a university degree (Blandy, Davies and Davies,
A Quantitative Assessment of the Combined Economies of Playford and
Salisbury, December 2008, page 3).
