Michael Ratcliffe (Bachelor of Nursing)

Michael RatcliffeI chose to study this program as I have always had an interest in wanting to know how things work and operate, particularly from a biochemical perspective. UniSA offered this particular program which sounded exciting and I just wanted to be involved in it.

What I enjoyed about UniSA was the smaller classes during 2nd and 3rd year, they made for a relaxed and easy going learning environment, with the opportunity to ask more questions and understand concepts better. A highlight of my time at UniSA was meeting new people who share similar interests to you. Uni teaches you to grow up because you are expected to take on a lot more responsibility and it makes you independent but at the same time teaches you to be a team player.

It appears obvious that the teaching staff have a passion for what they are teaching and have an interest in students’ learning.

Training to be a scientist, you spend a lot of the time in the lab practicing techniques and learning new skills and being able to work in modern labs at UniSA make the experience much more enjoyable.

I hope to complete my honours year in natural product chemistry and maybe continue on to a PhD, however if the opportunity to earn reasonable money arises, I may enter the work force for a couple of years. I like to help people and the honours project I am involved in is all about that. It is also about continuing the learning process and extending my knowledge base.

I think the characteristics you require to be a leader in this field are self-motivation, self discipline and time management. With these in place it makes the rest of the journey a lot easier. You should know how to have fun because science is not all serious work.
