Mental Health Master Class
IGML Program,
Graduate Diploma of Mental Health/ Mental Health Nursing UniSA’s School of
Nursing and Midwifery hosted 2 Mental Health Master Classes during 2008.
Almost 100 UniSA nursing students and staff attended the Master Classes –
each presented Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Candidates from SA’s Child
and Adolescent Mental Health Services and the Central Northern Adelaide
Health Service.
Topics covered included deliberate self harm with suicidal intent; advanced
mental health assessment; trauma and complex care for children and young
people; refugee and transcultural mental health; diagnostic formulation for
repeated self harm and treatment resistant behaviour. Each presenter worked
through a de-identified case; holistic assessment models, discussed
findings, decision points and interagency referral plans. The Master Classes
were interactive with opportunity for staff and students to ask questions
and participate in debate and discussion.
Feedback from participants about the benefits of the Master Classes has been
uniformly positive. Mental Health Master Classes will continue in 2009 and
be open to all postgraduate nursing students. Topics to be covered during
2009 include dual diagnosis in mental health; advances and interventions in
cognitive behaviour therapy; advances in rural and emergency mental health
care in rural and remote settings. Further details and invitations to
participate will be announced via student and staff email.
