This course is offered collaboratively with the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy Incorporated (ASCIA). The course provides an understanding of the role of the allergy nurse, the allergic process and allergic disease and the varying manifestations in both children and adults. Emphasis is on providing opportunities for nurses to become effective and critical consumers of research information available in the field of allergy. Students who successfully complete the course will be awarded a Certificate and may be eligible for credit in other tertiary programs. A supervised clinical practice component enables students to integrate theory and practice.
Course weighting: equivalent to 9.0 units of study
Course duration: completed over 16 weeks of study.
Course workload: equivalent to 315hrs of work
Evidence of current registration with relevant Nurse’s Registration Authority in own county or place of residence.
Aim
This course aims to provide registered nurses with the knowledge, skills and experiences to work competently in the field of allergy nursing.
Outcomes
On completion of this program, participants will be able to:
describe the role of the allergy nurse and how it is situated within the field of immunology
explain the immune system, how allergy manifests and factors affecting allergic disease and its progression
explain why prevention and early intervention measures in the ‘allergic march’ are vital to the quality of life for patients and their families and how such measures can, potentially, reduce the cost to the health system
describe the testing for allergic disease and the role of the nurse in the process
debate issues pertaining to allergy nursing and support arguments with evidence
practice allergy nursing within professional, legal and ethical parameters
demonstrate appropriate assessment, decision making and nursing interventions in the management of patients experiencing allergic conditions
educate patients and their families about early intervention, treatment and management strategies.

practise as a safe competent allergy nurse in a variety of settings.

This course is offered online and students have access to digitalised readings, online discussion forums, PowerPoint presentation & videos. It is expected that students have a basic knowledge of computing.
There are no hardcopy materials for this online course. All the materials you require can be accessed online.
Assessment consists of two theoretical assignments which are graded and a clinical competency non-graded assessment.
