The team leader, Dr Tahereh Ziaian is a Lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of South Australia. She is a Health Psychologist in the area of transcultural mental health, with 10 years of project management experience and 18 years of qualitative and quantitative research experience in working with different groups in the primary health care and mental health areas both in private and public health settings. Dr Ziaian has been an advocate for promoting the health outcomes of the migrant and refugee projects she has worked on. She will have prime responsibility for the day-to-day management of the project, including the direction of the Research Assistant.  She is an experienced supervisor to Higher Degree by Research students and will be the co-supervisor of the PhD students associated with the project.

Associate Professor Nicholas Procter teaches mental health at the University of South Australia. He has a longstanding interest in mental health education, research and practice and has published widely on these topics. Most recently, Professor Procter has been involved in developing mental health promotion and suicide prevention initiatives for Afghan asylum seekers released from immigration detention centres in Australia. His contribution to this project will be wide expertise in transcultural mental health, co-management of the project, and direct involvement with the other investigators in pursuing project aims, both theoretical and practical. Associate Professor Nicholas Procter will be the co-supervisor of the PhD and Master students associated with the project.

Professor M Sawyer is the Head of the Research and Evaluation Unit at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Professor Sawyer has a background in grant-funded research over the past 15 years. He has research experience in the area of early childhood and HRQOL for over a decade and will provide scientific support for the project. Professor Sawyer will be the co-supervisor of the PhD student associated with the project.

Associate Professor P Baghurst is the Head of Public Health Research Unit at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital and is a clinical lecturer at the University of Adelaide. He has research experience in child development and is the National Convenor of the Child Health Special Interest Group and a member of the Public Health Association of Australia. Other clinical interests include health service utilisation by children and families, the epidemiology of children’s health problems, and nutrition and women’s health. Associate Professor Baghurst will provide statistical support for the project.

Helena first became involved in refugee issues while on student field placement at Justice for Refugees South Australia. Helena went on to work for the Migrant Health Service for two years, after which she became the Director of Multicultural Youth SA, a position she still holds. Helena is currently completing her PhD as part of the project, and will provide support as a Research Associate.
