The Privacy Amendment (Private Sector) Act 2000 ('Privacy Act') came into effect on 21 December 2001 and has some implications for the way that the University collects, uses and discloses Personal Information about individuals (including employees, customers, contractors, subscribers, agents and internet users).
While as a body corporate, the University sits outside the jurisdiction of the Privacy Act and is therefore not required to observe the National Privacy Principles, the Privacy Act does have an indirect impact on the University. The Privacy Act and the National Privacy Principles apply to organisations and entities that the University has an association with. These bodies are separate organisations in their own right and include entities such as research institutions, partners in joint ventures, incorporated bodies or trusts or unincorporated associations.
The University has policies, guidelines, procedures and other documentation that provide staff with information regarding privacy. These include the Code of Ethical Conduct, Use of University Information Technology Facilities, Confidentiality of Student Personal Information etc.
