Free UniSA
seminar to debunk the ageing myths
Walking frames,
incontinence and losing your memory … if you believe this stereotype about
ageing then there might not be much to looking forward to.
But as more and
more people are proving, there is no reason why ageing need go hand in
hand with a gradual decline in health and physical and mental activity.
A free public
seminar, Successful Ageing in Australia, to be held on
Friday November 29 from 2 - 4pm at the University of South Australia’s
City West Campus, will look at the changing face of ageing in Australia
and around the world, debunk the myths associated with ageing, and reveal
the secrets that we all want to know about remaining active and happy in
later life.
The director of
UniSA’s Centre for Ageing Studies, Professor Gary Andrews, will explore
the role that environment, lifestyle, nutrition and genes all have to play
in how we age, and will argue that now, more than ever, there are steps
that can be taken to ensure a happy and healthy time in our later years.
A physician who
founded the Australian Society for Geriatric Medicine, Professor Andrews’
research on ageing has encompassed more than 20 counties, from Asia to the
Middle East and Latin America, and he has served as a special advisor on
Ageing to the UN.
Also speaking
at the seminar will be Mandy Stanley, a lecturer at UniSA’s School of
Occupational Therapy, who will announce early results of her PhD study
which looks at older people’s perceptions of well-being.
Stanley,
an occupational therapist of 23 years experience who served on Helping
Hand Aged Care’s management board for nine years, will also discuss the
latest significant research on successful ageing from around the world.
