UniSA students happy to spread the word

They say word of mouth is the best form of advertising so it comes as no surprise that UniSA is happy with the latest Student Experiences Questionnaire.  Results from this latest survey of student satisfaction show that 87 per cent of UniSA students would recommend it to their colleagues, friends and family members.

The email questionnaire was given to current UniSA students involved in coursework and research and covered four different areas – internal and external coursework, as well as internal and external research. The results found 86 per cent of students are happy with their experience at UniSA. Almost 31 per cent of students completed the 2002 survey.

UniSA’s acting Pro Vice Chancellor for Access and Learning Support Dr Alan Bundy said the survey gave the University an opportunity to make improvements for students that directly related to their stated needs.

“There is a real immediacy in this. Because the survey is conducted every two years we can get a very strong measure of what we are doing right and just what needs improvement and we can act on that quickly,” Dr Bundy said.

“There are graduate exit surveys done for students who have completed their degrees but our testing is designed to build in continuous improvement that will show real results for students before they graduate.”

The questionnaire asked the students to answer a series of questions relating to areas ranging from – academic life, security, information technology, the library and also university life. The students had a choice of six answers ranging from – strongly agree or disagree through to not applicable.

The SEQ was designed to provide feedback from the students in relation to their satisfaction with the University, which would inform the Student Services Advisory Committee responsible for service development.

Other results highlighted that the 91 per cent of students felt safe on campus. Issues of concern included needing more access to computers on campus, the range of food on campus, availability of books in the library, financial support for research students and communications from the student union, USASA.

Overall the students reported that they were happy with their chosen programs and the approachability and helpfulness of teaching staff. More than 80 per cent said that core administrative staff were helpful and responsive.
