UniSA looks at women on top

While there may be some disillusionment out there with the “women can have it all” philosophy of the 1980s and 90s, more than ever before in history women are taking it to the top – becoming senior managers, company directors and political leaders.

But what does it take to be on top and what is the future for women in leadership roles in the 21st century? In an Australia where birth rates are plummeting, where women who do have children are waiting longer to do so and where paid maternity leave is still under hot debate, are women today more likely to have what they choose rather than having it all?

In the fourth of a series of free public lectures presented through UniSA’s Weaving the Social Fabric series, Dr Margaret Peters will look at the future for women leaders and executives.

The lecture will be held at UniSA’s City West campus, 70 North Terrace at 6 pm this evening (August 19 2002) in the Yungondi Building.

Senior lecturer in Communications and New Media at UniSA, Dr Peters will explore the rapidly changing face of managerial cultures today and the growing importance of the knowledge economy. Her lecture will draw on the personal experiences of 200 male and female Australian executives interviewed in a major research project looking at how gender is perceived in the workplace today.

The lecture will uncover perceptions never discussed in the boardrooms and rarely shared among executive peers and will provide new perspectives on our leaders, their emotional investments in their jobs, their values, beliefs and assumptions and the whole tug between power and rewards, responsibilities and leadership.
