Industry support builds better builders at UniSA

They say success breeds success and two high profile SA building professionals are set to prove the theory this month when they offer special support to new students in the field.

Managers of the high profile SA company Built Environs, and graduates of UniSA, Mick O’Conner and Phil Tregenza are supporting a program of significant scholarships for young construction management and economics students that will cut their HECS debt and acknowledge their good work at the early stage of their degree programs. The scholarships are available to high achievers in their first or second year of study.

The first of the $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to first year students, Luke Goldup of Kensington and Martin Valentine of Magill on June 19 at UniSA’s City East Campus.

Associate Professor George Zillante, Head of Building at UniSA, says the scholarships offer an invaluable incentive for students.

“We are extremely proud that our successful graduates want to put something back into the industry through supporting education,” Zillante says.

“It shows that they have left UniSA with an appreciation of the importance of education in the development of professional industries. That they choose to make an investment in the future of their profession by supporting today’s students is a real testament to their commitment to the industry and to the wider community.”

Zillante says the scholarships will be awarded to two students each year over the next four years.

According to Zillante the building industry as a whole in SA is keen to support education.

“There seems to be a very strong commitment in this state to making sure that the next generation of builders and planners are top notch,” he said.

“Along with $20,000 from Built Environs we also have a matching amount from Baulderstone Hornibrook for scholarships to help our students gain international study experience at universities in the US and the UK.”

He said negotiations with other national building companies were continuing for further scholarship support and other collaborations including work placements and employment opportunities for new graduates.

The first two Built Environs Scholarships will be awarded on June 19 at 5 pm at City East Campus corner North Terrace and Frome Road, Bonython Jubilee Building, level 3 room 52.
