UniSA’s Indigenous Open Day

The Magill Campus will be open to the public this Friday, 18 October 2002, between 11:30 - 3:00pm for the University’s Indigenous Open day.  This annual event is run by the University’s Aboriginal and Islander Support Unit (AISU) on behalf of the three hundred Indigenous students currently enrolled, as an invitation to Indigenous people to follow their lead and take up tertiary study.

The Aboriginal and Islander Support Unit is an integral part of the University’s new College of Indigenous Education and Research and has been providing a range of pastoral, academic and social support services to the two thousand Indigenous students who have passed through the doors of the University since 1973.

Visual arts student, Eliza Marie Wilson, will be presented with this year’s Tappa Tangka Manninendi medal acknowledging the Indigenous student at UniSA with the highest grade point average.

Most Indigenous Year 11 and 12 students in South Australia are enrolled in metropolitan schools, so this event provides a major opportunity for schools in the metropolitan area to satisfy the curiosity of their Indigenous students about their future careers.  Visitors will be able to listen and participate in a discussion about the value of tertiary education for Indigenous people and communities, and will also be treated to displays of jewellery making, face painting and live music.

Representatives from various Indigenous organisations will also run displays and information booths and entertainment will also be provided throughout the Day.

Since 1973, the University’s Indigenous Support Services has graduated more than eight hundred Indigenous students (out of the sixteen thousand across the country), across all Divisions and most programs, and this has underpinned UniSA’s commitment to Indigenous education right through to the new century.
