UniSA students happy to spread the word

They say word of mouth is the best form of advertising so it comes as no surprise that UniSA is happy with the results of its latest university-wide Student Experiences Questionnaire (SEQ). The survey showed 87 per cent of UniSA students would recommend the University to their colleagues, friends and family members, a 10 per cent increase on the 2000 results.

The online questionnaire was made available to all UniSA students studying in Australia. Over 31 per cent of students responded to the questionnaire.

Other results showed that 91 per cent of students felt safe on campus, 85 per cent were finding their courses academically challenging and enjoyable and over 80per cent found Campus Central (the University’s one stop shop for student and campus administration) staff helpful and responsive.

UniSA’s acting Pro Vice Chancellor for Access and Learning Support Dr Alan Bundy said the survey gave the University an opportunity to make improvements for students that directly related to their stated needs.

“There is a real immediacy in this. Because the survey is conducted every two years we can get a very strong measure of what we are doing right and just what needs improvement and we can act on that quickly,” Dr Bundy said.

“There are exit surveys done for students who have completed their degrees but our testing is designed to build in continuous improvement that will show real results for students before they graduate.”

The SEQ was designed to provide feedback from the students in relation to their satisfaction with the University. The questionnaire asked the students to answer a series of questions relating to areas ranging from – academic life, student administration, support services, security, information technology, the library and also university life. The students had a choice of six answers ranging from – strongly agree or disagree through to not applicable.

The information from the SEQ is widely circulated to assist all University areas to enhance their services. The University’s Student Services Advisory Committee (SSAC) uses the information to determine and prioritise service improvement and development strategies.

Improved access to literary resources, computers and catering on campus are just a few of the identified issues that UniSA is working to respond to. Information on improvement activities is available at http://www.unisa.edu.au/servicestrategy/.
