He launched Australias first website on bullying four
years ago. He has published countless articles and books on the subject, and now
UniSAs Professor
Ken Rigby has produced a must-have easy guide for teachers and parents on bullying.
Stop the Bullying - a handbook for schools is a comprehensive and
accessible book providing step by step guidance on actions and strategies that can help to
prevent and stop bullying in schools.
And Professor Rigby says what is unique about the publication is that it is both
practical and research-based. It is not based simply on personal opinion.
"I have developed the book so that it is clear, concise and above all easy to use.
But for those interested in finding out more about bullying in schools there is a
comprehensive reference section at the back," he said.
The
book draws largely from a 10-year study of bullying in Australian schools in which
hundreds of parents and teachers and more than 40,000 students took part."
Professor Rigbys research is recognised internationally. He is currently
conducting studies with co-researchers in Israel, South Africa, India and Italy in an
examination of cross-cultural responses of student bystanders who witness bullying in
schools.
Professor Rigby said the new publication had been pitched to meet the needs of people
at the front line of school bullying.
"It will be a valuable resource for schools but I also believe parents will find
it accessible and useful, especially if their children have been affected by
bullying," he said.
"With more and more students wanting to take on an active role in discouraging
bullying at their school, the book can also be used as guide to how students can become
constructively involved. They can provide the key to successful policies and
interventions."
Stop the Bullying a handbook for schools describes 35 things that
schools and parents can do to prevent and counter bullying and each one of actions the
schools and or parents can take is dealt with conveniently on a separate page.
The book is published by ACER Press, Victoria, and can be ordered at http://www.education.unisa.edu.au/bullying/contents.html.
