Valuing Art and Culture: thoughts from a UK expert

UniSA’s Arts and Cultural Management Program has welcomed the arrival of UK expert Professor John Holden as a visiting professor to the University.

Widely published on a range of culture related topics, Professor Holden will be in Adelaide from the January 28 to February 9 based at UniSA’s School of Management. He will deliver the keynote address at a research symposium looking at how communities value arts and culture and the significance of the arts in the wider community.

The research symposium - How do we value arts and culture? - will be help at UniSA’s City West campus from 10 am on Tuesday February 3, 2009.

Prof Holden was previously Head of Culture at Demos and is a Visiting Professor at City University. He has Masters Degrees in law and art history and his main professional interest is in the development of people and organisations in the cultural sector.

He has been involved in numerous major projects across the sector, from libraries to music to heritage, and has worked with many organisations both large and small.

He was a principal organiser of the influential Valuing Culture conference in June 2003, and has developed a theme of work around the topic of cultural value.

He has spoken at many conferences in the UK, and also in Finland, the US, Australia and New Zealand and is a member of the Management Committee of the Clore Leadership Programme, and a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts.
