UniSA wins strong support for real world research
UniSA
has retained a leading position in South Australia in attracting
Australian Research Council funding
for research projects partnered with industry.
Results just released from the funding body show UniSA has been awarded
almost $3.3 million in Linkage Grant funding for 10 significant research
projects designed to solve industry problems in a range of fields from
the environment and mining through to sports training and food
industries and the development of better medicines.
University of South Australia
Vice Chancellor Professor Peter Høj said the results saw UniSA
retain its place as the sixth highest performing Australian university
for industry and community linked research.
“These results are very pleasing because they reflect the very engaged
and significant role our researchers play in the wider community in
helping business, industry and government to improve their processes,
products and outcomes,” Prof Høj.
“This is one of the most exciting aspects of university research – it’s
potential to actually make a difference in the world.”
The 10 successful grants have been matched with almost $6 million from
industry partners across the state and the nation.
Key projects include four focussing on ‘green’ or reduced waste outcomes
across the mining, housing and urban development and food service
industries.
One of the projects will analyse the impact of sleep on sporting
performance in elite athletes, another will look at how we prepare and
support teachers to deliver evolving curricula.
In the area of health engineering, research into the development of a
capsule able to be used in the small intestine to help diagnose and
treat illnesses has also won support.
Support has also gone to a project looking at enhancing communications
in rural and remote locations through the development of bandwidth
efficient technologies which are both cheaper and more reliable.
And another project will focus on water resources management in an
emerging environment where water markets and marketing will become part
of life in rural and regional Australia.
Prof Høj congratulated all successful UniSA research teams on their
innovative approach and their continuing commitment to working with
industry in areas of importance for all Australians.
“The creativity and dedication that comes from university researchers is
often underestimated,” he said.
“For every team successful in gaining support for their research there
are many other worthy teams keen to take on new research challenges and
contribute to improving society. Their work is invaluable.”
