Scholarships and grants boost student opportunities at UniSA

Scholarships and grants boost student opportunities at UniSADisadvantaged students and those with outstanding academic ability will receive important financial support for their studies when UniSA holds its 2009 Scholarships and Grants Ceremony tomorrow night.

More than 120 scholarships and grants, valued at almost $590,000, will be presented to students by corporate and individual donors.

UniSA Vice Chancellor Peter Høj said the ceremony was a great opportunity to acknowledge the generous support of donors through the UniSA Foundation, and for donors and recipients to meet.

“The ceremony gives donors the chance to see what an enormous difference their generous support can make to the lives and careers of others,” Prof Høj said.

“Education is one of our most valuable assets. Tonight we celebrate relationships between UniSA and our corporate and private donors who share our commitment to access and excellence in education.

“Through their generosity and support, we are able to provide many disadvantaged students and those with outstanding academic ability with the opportunity to achieve their academic dreams.”

Nursing student Wendy Barth will receive the Gavin Wanganeen Indigenous Scholarship, which is valued at $5,000 per year and reflects UniSA’s commitment to the education of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. Social justice is one of UniSA’s core values and a commitment to Indigenous education and reconciliation in enshrined in its founding Act.

Wendy said it was a great pleasure to be receiving the scholarship.

“I’m really pleased to receive the Gavin Wanganeen Scholarship, because it will help me financially with text books and travelling for practical training. I’m also a big fan of Gavin, which my friends like to stir me up about, so I can’t wait to meet him at the ceremony,” Wendy said.

Wendy is currently in the second year of her three-year UniSA nursing degree, which she is doing by external study. She started her working career as a pharmacy assistant aged 17, has worked in home care and aged care, and holds a Certificate III in Aged Care and a Diploma of Enrolled Nursing from TAFE SA, as well as certificates in mental health and blood pathology.

“I’ve always wanted to be a nurse but I’ve taken the long way around as I was worried how hard the study would be and I was scared of failing,” Wendy said.

“I’m glad I did it this way though as it has given me better experience and I’ve learned a great deal along the way.”

UniSA’s 2009 Scholarships and Grants Ceremony will be held from 6.30pm tomorrow night (Wednesday 27 May) at UniSA City West Campus, Kerry Packer Civic Gallery (Level 3), Hawke Building, 55 North Terrace.
