Team UniSA set to shift into overdrive
UniSA’s
involvement in the
Australian HPV Super Series has reached another level, with Team
UniSA set to contest the Round 2 Endurance race at Victoria Park this
Sunday.
UniSA signed on as the lead sponsor for the popular event, known to many South Australians as the Pedal Prix, in May and now has its own student team ready to race in the open category.
Team UniSA comprises six students currently studying Mechanical Engineering, Business Management and Pharmacy at the university, all of whom are ready to shift into overdrive for the nine-hour UniSA HPV Endurance event on Sunday.
Team Manager Brian McAvaney, who is studying a double degree in Business Management and Mechanical Engineering, said his crew was looking forward to competing in their Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) from Tri-Sled HPVs. The team comprises McAvaney, Rob Schulz, Harmohan Singh, Andrew Coles, Phillip Chen and John Ho.
“We think we’ll be fairly competitive and we’ll give it a good go on Sunday,” McAvaney said.
“Our HPV has a corflute fairing and a very light chromoly frame, which makes for a fast, versatile vehicle. It’s designed in a way that allows our riders to get out the most of what we put in. We’ve managed to pull some decent times in training, and we’re hoping to put in a good effort on Sunday.”
McAvaney said he was keen to build on Team UniSA’s involvement in the Australian HPV Super Series next year by helping out a school team with the engineering and design of their vehicle.
“It’s a great event and it’s not something I got to do when I was at school, so I’d like to be able to help out a school team and maybe help to develop some of our budding young mechanical engineers of the future,” he said.
The UniSA Australian HPV Super Series encapsulates many of UniSA’s core values around education, the development of sustainable communities, healthy lifestyles, communication and teamwork, and research and innovation.
