UniSA makes students’ experience a bonus
From
2010 school students will never be clearer about the value of their
school curriculum because studying particular subjects at school, will
give Year 12s bonus points for matched university programs.
UniSA Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Peter Lee says the importance of the new scheme is that it will reward students’ achievement in the Year 12 subjects that UniSA believes will better prepare them for study when they move on to university.
The new bonus points scheme will automatically apply for students gaining 10 out of 20 or more in many year 12 HESS general subjects which are relevant to the program they choose to study at UniSA.
So, students hoping to enter a Commerce degree will earn bonus points if they have done well in year 12 Accounting Studies and subjects such as English Studies.
In fact studies in English will earn students bonus points for all degree programs at UniSA in recognition of the importance of strong literacy skills in the University learning environment.
“What is important about the new scheme is that it acknowledges that a
TER score alone is not a complete indication of a student’s potential to
succeed at university,” Prof Lee says.
“Through the new scheme the University will be combining the overall
performance of the student - the TER - with achievement in particular
subjects. This both rewards students and at the same time gives them
flexibility in the career they choose to pursue..
“It also recognises some of the latest research which shows that
students who have studied content at school which they then go on to
study at university, will have a smoother transition to university and
greater success in their degree studies.
“The new
Subject Bonus Points Scheme supports the concept of building
knowledge and developing expertise in a field of study.
“In line with national targets for increasing the skills of the
Australian population, we want to encourage more opportunities for more
young people to fulfil their potential and pursue their goals.”
Professor Lee says UniSA’s new Subject Bonus Points Scheme builds in
flexibility for students when they apply for entry to several different
programs because there is more opportunity to earn bonus points from
several subjects they may be studying in year 12.
“Instead of bringing in a range of complicated prerequisites for
students, we are allowing for the fact that young people’s goals often
change,” he says.
“This scheme is flexible enough to cope with students evolving notion of
career, so that they are not locked out of opportunities to pursue a new
goal because of subject choices they might have made in years 10 or 11.”
