Positive Futures for people with disabilities
The
University of South Australia and
the
City of Playford are hosting an expo next week to provide
information for people with disabilities about the education, employment
and training opportunities available to them.
The Positive Futures Expo to be held this Tuesday August 25 at the Playford Civic Centre in Elizabeth will feature 25 stalls and workshops throughout the day from 10am-3pm and again from 5pm-7pm.
Jenny Watts Sampson, National Disability coordination officer at UniSA believes the expo will provide valuable information for people with disabilities.
“This event is being put on in conjunction with the City of Playford to provide information to school students, their parents and teachers as well as people in the community who have a disability about options for further education and employment pathways,” she said.
“We wanted to create opportunities for people to sit down and talk with experts about specific issues and topics.”
Jenny will be assisting in the workshop for students interested in tertiary education which will run at 1.30pm and again at 5.30pm.
“Some people might think university is not an option for people with a disability but with UniSA’s support services, disabilities action plans are created to help students to overcome any barriers they may face in achieving their learning goals.”
Stephen Manson, Senior Disability Adviser at UniSA has seen first hand that tertiary education is achievable for people with disabilities.
“UniSA has more students with disabilities than any other Australian university and the success and retention of students with disabilities is comparable to other students,” Manson said.
“Right now we have more than 1400 students with disabilities enrolled in a full range of programs across the university, including professions such as teaching and engineering.”
