SA is the place to be for Australian events

Assoc Prof Vivienne McCabe and Prof Graham Brown receive the awardUniSA’s School of Management has been rated as having the top program in Australia for the events industry.

The School of Management was awarded the ‘Best Education Program’ at the 2009 Australian Best Events Awards in Sydney last week.

The Australian Best Events Awards is a national awards program that recognises excellence within the Australian events industry and features a judging panel of industry experts, including the former CEO of the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games.

The UniSA program was selected as the winner from an Australia-wide entry field, including finalists Kenvale College and the Tourism and Hotel Management Centre at the Canberra Institute of Technology.

Judges awarded the top honour to the UniSA program, which includes a Master of Management (Arts and Cultural Management) and Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management, for being a “valuable educational opportunity and resource for event professionals”, with a particular emphasis on the real world experience that forms part of the program.

Associate Professor Stephen Boyle, Acting Head of School of the School of Management, said the award was a great achievement for staff, students and graduates.

“We are thrilled to be recognised for the quality of our teaching and research through this industry award,” he said.

“It demonstrates our commitment to the events industry across many areas such as the arts, conventions and sport.”

Prof Boyle said that the judges recognised the ‘work ready’ approach of the program.

“A significant aspect of all our event programs is the incorporation of student projects and placements,” he said.

“Positioned in Adelaide, an internationally recognised major ‘festival’ city, our event management programs are uniquely situated to provide students, graduates and staff with fantastic opportunities to explore and participate in the events industry.

“Many of our graduates now have senior positions in arts and festival related organisations internationally.”

The award follows the School of Management’s SA Tourism Award for Education and Training in 2008.
