Visiting Professor examines high end research ethics

Professor John WeckertA free public lecture will offer candid insights into the interaction between UniSA’s Ian Wark Research Institute (The Wark™) and the general public at UniSA's Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre tomorrow (November 12th).

Prominent researcher Professor John Weckert will deliver a report detailing his two year appraisal of the ethics of public interaction within The Wark’s™ research procedures, based on interviews with key researchers and an observation of the Institute’s research process.

Prof Weckert, from Charles Sturt University, was appointed a joint Visiting Research Fellow in Applied Ethics by the Ethics Centre of South Australia (ECSA) and The Wark™ in 2007.

The appointment was based on Prof Weckert’s expertise in ethics and new technologies with a focus on information and communication technology and nanotechnology.

He currently holds an ARC Linkage grant with the Australian Computer Society on ethics and regulation in the ICT industry and a National Science Foundation (US) grant on nanotechnology and human enhancement.

He was appointed as the ECSA/IWRI Fellow in Ethics in 2007. He is also founding Editor-in-Chief of the journal Nanoethics: Ethics for Technologies that Converge at the Nanoscale.

Leading researcher at The Wark™, Professor Hans Griesser, will also discuss cutting-edge research now being conducted at the Institute as part of the seminar.

Executive Director of the Hawke Centre, Elizabeth Ho, says that the seminar will provide an objective look at the research ethics of a prominent research body.

“Alongside being privy to the latest research at The Wark™, guests will have a unique opportunity to hear the findings of Prof Weckert’s report first hand,” she says.

“The seminar will give a rare insight into the practice of international scientific research as well as a candid ethical evaluation of what is taking place when research confronts the public.”
