Mawson Lakes drives sustainability with Brake-Fast Breakfast

Cycling to workMawson Lakes residents, workers and students are being encouraged to help the environment by leaving their cars at home and using more environmentally-friendly transport at a Brake-Fast Breakfast on Wednesday May 20.

Brake-Fast will promote alternative forms of transport and will help the community’s workers, students and residents get out from behind the wheel and meet each other.

All those who participate in the event are invited to a free breakfast between 8am and 10am at The Mawson Centre Plaza, corner Main Street and University Parade. This event will include entertainment and displays on public transport, cycling, solar cars and commuter bikes. There will also be a door prize for those who register for the breakfast on the day.

Being staged by Mawson Lakes Development, University of South Australia, City of Salisbury, TravelSmart and Technology Park Adelaide, the Brake-Fast Breakfast was first held in 2008.

UniSA's School of Natural and Built Environments Head, Professor Patrick James, said the 2008 event saved more than 3000km in car travel and 1000kg of carbon dioxide.

“The initiative has the potential to save 22 tonnes of carbon emissions if all the community’s workers who usually drive left their car at home,” Prof James said.

“This is same amount of carbon dioxide that 1000 trees would absorb in a year. More importantly, this event helps to create more sustainable commuting habits by generating awareness of all the other forms of transport workers can use.

“Whether people catch public transport, cycle, skateboard, rollerblade or walk, they are all taking steps towards saving the environment and improving their health with increased physical activity.

“We hope to see as many residents, workers and students as possible at the Brake-Fast Breakfast.”

More information about the event and other forms of transport is available on the Mawson Lakes Community website at www.mawsonlakescommunity.com.au

The website includes a personal calculator for people to measure their own carbon emission and fuel savings if they participate in the event.
