UniSA-Dubai partnership to give midwives global experience

UniSA midwifery students experience health care in Dubai In what is a first for nursing education in South Australia, eight final year students from UniSA's Bachelor of Midwifery will be part of a three week study tour to Dubai from today involving opportunities to work in one of Dubai’s biggest teaching hospitals.

In the first phase of an agreement with Dubai’s Al Wasl Hospital, UniSA’s student midwives will be working in the hospital putting theory into practice in a completely new cultural setting.

Established by the Government of the United Arab Emirates in 1987, Al Wasl Hospital was the first hospital in Dubai to provide medical care specifically for women and children. A renowned secondary and tertiary healthcare facility it specialises in obstetrics, gynaecology, and paediatric and paediatric surgery and includes a special baby care unit.

UniSA’s Head of School of Nursing and Midwifery, Professor Helen McCutcheon says the opportunity to give training midwives international experience of this kind is invaluable.

“We are delighted and honoured to have forged this important and unique partnership with the Dubai Health Authority (DHA),” Prof McCutcheon said.

“As the first relationship of its kind for the DHA, we feel privileged to have our students take on this role and hope to build on the partnership.

“Experiential learning is critical in the development of excellent graduates and vital in the field of midwifery.

“To have the opportunity to complete some of that learning in an international context gives our students a significant advantage in a career that in high demand around the world.”

The students have been supported in part by UniSA to take advantage of the opportunity.

The new project was launched in Dubai yesterday.
