Scholarship to support Port Pirie student at university
Port Pirie students who are starting university study at UniSA in
2009 are invited to apply for the Annette and Leon Davis Scholarship.
The scholarship is valued at up to $45,000 and will assist a student from Port Pirie in making the transition to university.
Students have until February 20 to apply for the scholarship and the successful applicant will be announced in March.
UniSA Pro Vice Chancellor: Strategy and Planning, Professor Hilary Winchester, said Port Pirie couple Annette and Leon Davis established the scholarship to help young people who wanted to continue on to higher education.
Professor Winchester said Annette and Leon Davis were both born in Port Pirie and understood the barriers sometimes experienced by young people from regional areas.
“A student from Port Pirie has to find not only the usual university student expenses, but they need to find new accommodation at city rental rates, and get used to living in a new environment without the support of their families,” she said.
“This scholarship helps to ensure students won’t miss the opportunity to study and succeed at tertiary level.”
The scholarship provides $11,000 per annum for four years and an additional $1000 in the first year to assist with relocation expenses.
To be eligible for the scholarship applicants must:
- Have lived in Port Pirie for at least three years.
- Have finished Year 12 in 2008, or completed Year 12 no more than two years ago.
- Be enrolled full time in an undergraduate degree program at UniSA.
- Be able to demonstrate financial disadvantage.
- Provide a personal written statement demonstrating career and personal goals and how the scholarship would help them to achieve their goals.
- Provide two character references.
- Attend an interview.
- Not be in receipt of another UniSA scholarship.
