UniSA welcomes new support for nurse education

UniSA wins 80 new places for nurse educationUniSA’s Head of Nursing and Midwifery, Professor Helen McCutcheon has welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement of 80 new nursing places at the University of South Australia.

The allocation is one of the highest in the nation and recognises the strong unmet need for nurse education in the state.

“We all know that the demand for qualified health workers from nurses and doctors right through to physiotherapists and other allied health experts is growing, especially as our population ages and we hit a demographic dip in the numbers of skilled young people,” Prof McCutcheon said.

“This will be an important boost for South Australia and we are especially delighted to have been able to make our bid for new places in collaboration with SA Health, so that every undergraduate nursing student will have access to the clinical placements so important to the educational experience.”

Prof McCutcheon said the long term quality of health care in Australia will be supported by this kind of investment in higher education and by important local partnerships that support the development of successful nursing and health care professionals.

The Federal Government announcement will see 135 places made available for student nurses in SA across UniSA and Flinders University. Across Australia, 1094 Commonwealth supported higher education places have been created.
