Learning the ropes - UniSA grant winner sails into port

The Young EndeavourUniSA student and inaugural Cowan Young Endeavour Practicum Grant recipient Taryn May will see land for the first time in ten days when she docks with the tall ship Young Endeavour this Saturday November 29.

May is one of the 24 strong youth crew - from all over Australia aged between 16 and 23 - who are learning the ropes of sailing a rigged tall ship from the professional Royal Australian Navy crew.

The fourth year Bachelor of Social Work and Bachelor of Arts (Aboriginal Studies) student said she was thrilled to receive the grant and have the opportunity to participate in the Young Endeavour experience.

"It’s an amazing opportunity and experience to be part of," May said.

"I learn a lot about Australia’s history as part of my Aboriginal studies degree and the link with Captain Cook’s Endeavour voyage makes this an even more fascinating experience for me.

"To see the different perspectives of Australia’s history this way and gain so many extra skills is fantastic – and I had never sailed before!"

As the first recipient of the Cowan Young Endeavour Practicum Grant, funded by Cowan Grant Pty Ltd, May’s entire berth and transportation costs were entirely covered through the scheme.

UniSA Deputy Director of Development, Yvonne Clark says the skills and opportunity provided by the Cowan Young Endeavour initiative highlights the value of real world experiences that complement formal education.

"Taryn is an ideal recipient with a high level of enthusiasm and drive. We’re extremely pleased she was able to gain this experience as the first recipient of the grant," Clark said.

"In addition to her academic studies, the voyage provides a unique and challenging opportunity for Taryn to develop her leadership, team work and interpersonal skills in the processing of learning to sail the ship.

"It is wonderful to have to support of donors like Bob Cowan, who provide such valuable support to financially disadvantaged students and young people with these types of grants."

Young Endeavour voyages have been operating since 1988 when the ship was given to the people of Australia as a Bicentennial gift.
