Food for thought
Is
bagged mixed lettuce your thing? Must it be organic? And do you prefer
it to be locally produced?
Consumer preferences - and a competitive global market - are changing what farmers grow, how wholesalers package it and when and where retailers sell it.
At UniSA’s City East campus next Thursday, Adelaide Thinker in Residence and leading food industry expert Dr Andrew Fearne will share some of his insights into the changing “paddock to plate” supply chain.
In his public presentation Food and Wine Value Chains: Prosperity through Collaborative Innovation, Dr Fearne explains some of the challenges and opportunities global supply chains present the SA agri-food and wine sectors.
“The physical location of primary production and food processing facilities is no longer a guarantor of preferred market access or a barrier to entry for competitors,” Dr Fearne says.
His paper presents the rationale for “collaborative innovation” in South Australia’s food and wine value chains.
Lecturer in Logistics and Supply Chain Management at UniSA, Dr Claudine Soosay says the University and wider SA community will also benefit from Dr Fearne’s expertise.
“UniSA’s teaching programs are highly relevant to existing industry situations, international issues and current research,” Dr Soosay says.
“Dr Fearne’s experience and renowned work have impacted many countries in Europe, the Middle East and South-East Asia. His visit will enhance our existing curricula, industry linkages and collaborative research in marketing, consumer behaviour and supply chain management.
“There is no doubt that UniSA, as well as South Australia’s agri-food and wine industries, will benefit from Dr Fearne’s residency in Adelaide.”
