Degree dividends at Christmas for more than 500 UniSA graduates

More than 500 UniSA students graduate todayMore than 500 UniSA students will cross the stage at the Adelaide Festival Theatre today to be awarded their degrees in everything from pharmacy and commerce to architecture and engineering, just in time for Christmas.

And more than half of the graduating cohort will receive Master degrees and another seven will be conferred with PhDs.

In an era of lifelong learning the 21st AMP.NATSEM Income and Wealth report released in November showed that despite the sacrifices and effort, both personal and financial, students who continue on to complete a university degree have the potential to earn $1.5 million more over their lifetime than those who do no further study after year 12.

UniSA manager of  domestic student recruitment, Darren McInnes said as the more than 12,000 South Australian students received their SACE results this week, many would be making decisions about further study over the next few weeks.

“I think it is clear that unlike many other investments in life, an investment in higher education pays long term dividends,” McInnes said.

“With the global economic situation deteriorating right now – study has just become a much more attractive option – and the stats are showing that applications for University are up.

“This week UniSA has been talking to thousands of students about the study and career options they have ahead of them. Once the results come out, school leavers have a chance to really consider what they want to do and we have some of our own current students ready to speak to them on the phone about life at uni, what the first few years are like and their experiences in their own study programs.

“We can also answer questions about preferences, entrance scores and bonus points and students can alter their study preferences right up until January 7 2009.”

UniSA is holding a preference information event on January 6 2009 at City West campus from 4 to 7pm or people can talk to a student by phoning 1300 UNI NOW.
