Fast talk on fast food

Fast food - friend or foe?Fast food and eating out are increasingly part of the modern western lifestyle but research is indicating that the health costs of convenience are high indeed – contributing to the rising incidence of obesity, heart disease and diabetes.

The nation’s leading health and nutrition experts will be in Adelaide next week to tackle the issues surrounding the impact of convenience foods on nutrition and health at a special public seminar - Fast food and health: Can nutrition be take-away? - hosted by UniSA and the Nutrition Society of Australia Inc, Adelaide.

The seminar will be held at UniSA’s City East campus in the Basil Hetzel Building, Mutual Community Lecture Theatre from 6 pm Wednesday April 23.

Key speakers at the seminar include Vice President of McDonald’s, Mr Steve Shillington, and co-author of the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet, Associate Professor Manny Noakes, who will lead a debate on whether food industry providers are really making a difference by catering for healthy and nutritious fast food.

The seminar will also feature Heart Foundation nutritionist, Ms Tuesday Udell, who will discuss the Heart Foundation Tick program, including how the program works and the public health impact of the Tick in the supermarket and eating out.

UniSA Research Fellow at the Health Sciences and Chair of the Nutrition Society of Australia (Adelaide group), Dr Karen Murphy, says that it’s an exciting and relevant line-up of speakers on a highly topical issue.

“We all know that obesity is a problem, but with increasing time pressures in everyday life, it gets harder and harder to make healthy choices on the run,” said Dr Murphy.

“That’s why it’s so important for food providers to help consumers make smart choices, and provide them with easy to read labels like the highly visible Tick symbol.

“This seminar is a wonderful opportunity to hear more from people like Tuesday Udell and Steve Shillington about the McDonalds journey and Tick program, as well as Prof Manny Noakes on nutrition, fast food, and what that means for a balanced diet and health.”

Dr Murphy is also pleased to welcome seminar moderator, Dr Rob Morrison, a science communicator and broadcaster most recognisable from the Curiosity Show who will lead the panel discussion.
