Chinese exhibition forges new artistic links for SA
A
recent exhibition of contemporary art in China has the potential to
create a wealth opportunity for the state’s artistic community and
students at the South Australian
School of Art (SASA) at UniSA.
SASA Program Director, Greg Donovan showed his latest work in an exhibition, titled Distant Image, to peer acclaim late last year while visiting the Fujian Normal University College of Fine Art in Fuzhou. He also visited the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art at Guangzhou University as part of an international residency and intercultural visit.
As a result of discussions with both institutions during his stay, Donovan said that developing academic links between SASA and the two Chinese schools is a priority and would likely include future exhibit exchanges between the institutions.
“The benefits of these links are far reaching, providing a deeper understanding of contemporary visual art between these Chinese regions and us here in Adelaide.
“For myself as a program director and a teacher I have deeper understanding of cultural perspectives that I can incorporate into both my teaching and my work as an artist.
“There are also possibilities of exchanges in the future with staff and students at both Chinese universities already interested in coming to Adelaide.”
In another coup for SASA, internationally regarded Chinese painter Professor Hu Zhen De indicated his interest in visiting Adelaide in 2008 to both exhibit and provide master classes to SASA students.
Selected artworks from Donovan’s highly successful Chinese exhibition are now on show in Adelaide at the Prospect Gallery until February 24, comprising digital print, mixed media and synthetic polymer paint on German etching paper.
The works, titled As if...distant image are part of a developing series exploring notions of whiteness, erasure, transparency, transience and the inherent nature of the cultural gaze linked to the generalized and descriptively meaningless “information age”.
A bilingual monograph on Donovan’s work, launched with his exhibition in China will also be available at the Adelaide exhibition.
