New mechanical engineering scholarships for country students
Rural
students looking to study mechanical engineering in South Australia will
now have an even greater opportunity to do so with this week’s
announcement of the George Alexander Foundation Scholarship.
The scholarship was initiated by the George Alexander Foundation and offers $10,000 over four years of study and assistance with a placement with UniSA’s Agricultural Machinery Research and Design Centre (AMRDC).
Business development manager at the AMRDC, Peter Bardadyn says the scholarship provides an excellent opportunity for students from rural or country areas who are often financially disadvantaged from attending a metropolitan university.
“There are fantastic career opportunities in mechanical engineering and students can work in mining, defence, energy and design as well as the agricultural sector,” he said.
“The scholarship allows students to choose from a range of courses and accelerated program options available at UniSA in one of five mechanical engineering specialisations, from Sustainable Systems and Applied Mechatronics to Nanotechnology and Advanced Manufacturing.
“UniSA programs are also focused on making students job ready, with most current students already working in their final year, so the industrial placement is a real benefit.”
The George Alexander Foundation has a special interest in supporting the education of talented young people, particularly those from rural and regional areas, and programs that offer practical experience.
This scholarship is a fitting tribute to George Alexander, a motor mechanic of limited means and a keen environmentalist, who built a fortune creating the first versions of brass hose fittings.
The scholarship is open to students from rural South Australia who have demonstrated high school grades as well as a demonstrated commitment to their community via extra circular activities such as employment, volunteer work, community activities and leadership roles.
The scholarship will be available each year over the next three years.
