Tom Calma reflects on Rudd’s first year
Final in the Essentials for Social Justice lecture series to be
delivered at UniSA
Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, Race
Discrimination Commissioner and Aboriginal elder from the Kungarakan and
Iwaidja tribal groups, Tom Calma, will be in Adelaide next week to
deliver his final lecture in the 2008 series Essentials for Social
Justice.
Sponsored by UniSA’s David Unaipon College of Indigenous Education and Research, the lecture will be held at the Bradley Forum, Hawke Building, UniSA, City West campus, Wednesday November 12 2008 from 5 pm.
In his lecture, Commissioner Calma will review the first 12 months of the Rudd Government, its agenda for Indigenous affairs and present his views on the important priorities for the year ahead.
Tom Calma has been deeply involved in Indigenous affairs at the local, community, state, national and international level. He was appointed as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner in 2004 and has been Race Discrimination Commissioner since July 2004.
He played a significant role as senior Indigenous Affairs advisor to the Minister for Immigration, Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs in 2003, and also served as a senior diplomat in India and Vietnam from 1995 to 2002.
He is also a White Ribbon Day ambassador for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
