Innovative architecture educator awarded

Rachel HurstUniSA senior lecturer in architecture, Rachel Hurst has received a Commendation in the 2008 Neville Quarry Architectural Education Prize presented at the Australian Institute of Architects’ (AIA) National Architecture Awards.

The Commendation recognises Hurst’s contribution to the field of undergraduate design teaching through her focus on innovation, many published articles and commitment to the highest objectives of architectural education.

Hurst says she is delighted to receive the Commendation.

“I was flattered to have received the support of the staff, students and academics who nominated me,” she says.

“I believe design teaching must integrate teaching, research and scholarship. All of these elements are an important part of education and I aim to bring them together as holistically as possible.”

Head of UniSA’s Louis Laybourne Smith School of Architecture and Design, Professor Mads Gaardboe says Hurst’s integrity and thoroughness made her a worthy recipient of the Commendation.

“It is tremendous to see Rachel recognised as an exemplar in Australian design teaching and as an inspiration to others in the field,” he says.

“Her innovative and integrated methods of teaching have been adopted by at least four other architecture schools in Australia, which is an absolute credit to her.”

Hurst has a background in architectural practice, and was a partner in a design firm specialising in small scale and residential projects for ten years.

Together with UniSA colleague Jane Lawrence, Hurst has presented 12 international and seven national papers. She has also received three University awards for teaching excellence and innovation.

Also at the AIA awards, John Wardle Architects received a National Commendation for Public Architecture for UniSA’s Hawke Building.
