Trev's in the home stretch -
Report 5 from the 2007 Panasonic World Solar Challenge
After
camping out under an almost full moon last night, Trev travelled some
400km today and pulled into Pt Augusta late this afternoon. The team
will travel another 100km or so before sunset before taking a
well-earned rest on the last night of its 2007 Panasonic World Solar
Challenge journey.
“We can actually see the waters of South Australia,” Dr Peter Pudney said. “We’ve almost crossed the continent.”
A World Solar Challenge veteran, having played a vital role in the design and construction of the Aurora solar car, Dr Pudney said the journey has been a lot easier with Trev.
“At the front of the solar car pack, there is much more pressure to perform,” he said. “In this event, we’ve stopped every hour or so, we’ve met lots of great people on the way and we’ve spent time with other teams.”
Dr Pudney said he expected Trev to come out well ahead of the other Greenfleet class vehicles in carbon emission comparisons currently being prepared.
“I think we’ve really shown the way of the future with smaller, lower mass vehicles that run on renewable energy,” he said. “Most people have cars that can tow boats and caravans – but you just don’t need that capacity in the city.
“Trev has really held his own, especially in the towns and cities, proving that a lightweight electric passenger vehicle is a viable means of transport. We’ve had lots of positive comments from people who really like Trev’s design and concept.”
All going well, Trev will arrive at the Torrens Parade Ground at 1pm tomorrow (Saturday October 27) and will join the rest of the Greenfleet class in the parade to Victoria Square at 2pm.
