Trev's doing 100km on less than $1 -
Report 2 from the 2007 Panasonic World Solar Challenge
The
lack of mobile phone coverage in the Northern Territory’s far north
prevented UniSA’s Trev team checking in from the 2007 Panasonic World
Solar Challenge yesterday.
But speaking from Tennant Creek this morning, Dr Peter Pudney reported all was going well as the Trev team made its way to Alice Springs.
“We’ve done 1000km and we’re running a bit slower than we’d hoped, as the rebuilt battery charger isn’t working perfectly,” Dr Pudney said, adding he was nevertheless delighted with Trev’s performance.
“Trev is averaging at about 80km/h and at the end of yesterday had travelled 854km on about $9 worth of electricity.”
The team is at the middle of the pack of solar vehicles, regularly overtaking them and then being overtaken as Trev stops to recharge.
The other alternative energy vehicles which make up Greenfleet class are about 30 minutes ahead of Trev, but Dr Pudney isn’t feeling at all threatened.
“We hope to catch them later today or early tomorrow,” he said. “But we reckon anyone who’s got petrol and oil in their car is cheating!”
Dr Pudney reported conditions are mostly good, although a strong head
wind which picked up this morning may slow Trev’s trek to the Alice.
Report 1 - Team has hiccups but Trev's fine
