Hong Kong graduations honor local philanthropist
About
650 graduates will celebrate the completion of their degree studies at
special University of South Australia
(UniSA) awards ceremonies in Hong Kong on July 21 and 22 at
Hong Kong Baptist
University and City University of
Hong Kong.
As part of the ceremony at HKBU, Hong Kong philanthropist and consultant
to the Hong Kong Grace Charity Foundation, Mrs Yuanlian Lee, will be
made an Honorary Fellow of the University of South Australia.
Yuanlian Lee has spent a lifetime dedicated to social work and to
fighting poverty through the development of educational opportunity. She
is the founder of the Hong Kong Grace Charity Foundation and consultant
to the Tsinghua
University Anti Poverty Project.
Among the hundreds of graduates, five students will be awarded their
PhDs, eight will receive their Doctor of Business Administration, and at
the HKBU ceremony, 156 students will be awarded Masters qualifications
in two key areas - Social Sciences (counselling) and Building and
Planning (project management).
The ceremonies will be attended for the first time by UniSA’s new
Vice Chancellor and President Professor Peter Høj who says he is
looking forward to meeting and talking to the new graduates.
“I feel privileged to be leading an institution that has developed
strong educational partnerships across the region - partnerships that
continue to make a difference to the lives of individuals and our
nations,” Professor Høj said.
“Educational engagement is one of the most valuable paths to
understanding, collaboration and development.”
The events will also be the last awards ceremony in Hong Kong for
retiring UniSA
Chancellor David Klingberg AM after almost 10 years with the
University.
“In that time one of my greatest pleasures has been to attend these
ceremonies in Hong Kong and other cities across the region and to see
the growth and pride education brings to the lives of our students,”
Chancellor Klingberg said.
“I estimate I have shaken the hands of almost 10,000 students as they
crossed the stage in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia since I was made
Chancellor. I have seen, on each and every face, what an important
educational milestone it is to graduate and it has been a great honour
to be part of that.”
Key speakers at the UniSA Awards ceremonies are UniSA
Pro Vice Chancellor for the Division of Business, Professor Gerry
Griffin and
Pro Vice Chancellor for the Division of Education Arts and Social
Sciences Professor Michael Rowan.
UniSA is one of the leading Australian education providers to the people
of Hong Kong offering programs both in South Australia and in Hong Kong
through educational partnerships with City University of Hong Kong,
APMI Kaplan, and Hong Kong Baptist
University. An average of 3000 students from Hong Kong study with UniSA
every year.
