Designed to make the world a better place

UniSA industrial design student Federico Roldan's electric bicycleDesigning products to improve people’s lives and to make the world a better place is par for the course for UniSA industrial design students.

This year, they’ve taken some of our most pressing issues – water use, sustainability and health – to come up with products ranging from comfortable high heels to a ute-mounted crane and water recycling system for fast food restaurants.

They’ll be on display this weekend at Innovate Me, the exhibition of 25 final-year industrial design students' work at the Torrens Parade Ground.

UniSA’s program director of industrial design, Peter Schumacher says he impressed by the level of social awareness in the students’ choice of products, as well as the quality of their design and execution.

“Each of the students has understood that industrial design is all about the way humans interact with the world around them,” Schumacher says.

“The way products are designed has a very real impact on our quality of life and the potential to make the world a better place – by making life easier, happier and just more enjoyable. Innovate Me reflects this way of thinking.”

Among the products on display are:

• The dream of many working women – comfortable high heels, designed in consultation with UniSA podiatrists

• A crane that can be mounted on the back of ute to help lift heavy loads

• A recycling water system designed to reduce amount of water and energy required in fast food restaurants

• A backpack for motorcyclists which takes into account the shape of the bike, the rider’s seating position and helmet

• Electric commuter bikes

• Furniture design which takes flat packs to a new level.

Innovate Me opens with an invitation-only industry function on Friday November 23 and is open to the public from 9am to 5pm on Sunday November 25 and Monday November 26.
