Adelaide High and UniSA build education strength
in the city’s West End
The
Minister for Education and Children’s Services, Dr Jane Lomax-Smith and
the University of South Australia Vice Chancellor, Professor Denise
Bradley, AO will sign a Memorandum of Understanding today, designed to
build education capacity in the west end of the city.
The signing will take place from 1 pm at the Adelaide High School, West Terrace, Adelaide in the main foyer.
The MOU will underpin the development of a university foundation program for international high school students studying at Adelaide High School in 2008 and will see the 100 year old public school expand its teaching spaces into the City West precinct.
Minister for Education Dr Jane Lomax-Smith said she believed the collaboration would expand the role of South Australia’s oldest high school and the city’s reputation as a high quality, safe education destination for international students.
“Increasing our share of international students is a key South Australia Strategic Plan target and this kind of partnership gives us a marketing edge to not only attract students to South Australia, but to keep them here for longer,” Dr Lomax-Smith says.
Principal of Adelaide High School Stephen Dowdy says the partnership with UniSA would strengthen the links between school and university for hundreds of local and international students studying at the city school.
“Adelaide High is delighted to be able to work in partnership with the University of South Australia to create a collaborative learning community supporting the State’s Strategic Plan,” he said. “This collaboration provides a new opportunity to pilot a framework for students to access university courses as part of their senior secondary education.”
UniSA’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Denise Bradley AO said the partnership presented exciting opportunities to further develop Adelaide’s reputation as an education city.
“The City West precinct has developed as a vibrant education hub since the University first opened the City West campus 10 years ago,” Professor Bradley said. Today there are more than 7,000 students studying at City West and almost 1500 of those are international.
“This MOU will strengthen that development and open up a learning partnership with Australia’s oldest free-access secondary school to offer students collaborative programs within the Future SACE.
“In developing Adelaide as an Education City, it is this style of
innovative collaboration that realises the State vision for the
development of the city as a dynamic, intellectual, capital - fully
engaged in the global community.”
