Opportunities at UniSA boosted by $480,000 in scholarships

More than 70 students win scholarships at UniSAMore than 70 students at UniSA will win important financial support for their studies when the 2007 scholarship winners are announced tonight (June 14) at the City East campus.

The scholarships and grants include 14 funded by corporate sponsors and eight scholarships which have been funded by private trusts and individual donors.

UniSA Vice Chancellor Professor Peter Høj says the celebration of the scholarships, offers an important opportunity for all donors to see what an enormous difference their generous support can make to the lives and careers of others.

“It is a very powerful thing to contribute to someone’s education – it breaks down the barriers of disadvantage, it encourages excellence and it opens opportunities for improvement and fulfilment,” Prof Høj said.

“At the level of the broader community, support for education is an investment in the well-being, success and prosperity of the whole society.

“Each and every one of our donors and supporters deserve to be congratulated for their generosity and their commitment to education as a path to opportunity.”

The scholarships and grants range in value from $1000 for one year to a three year PhD scholarship - the Central Northern Adelaide Health Service Scholarship - worth more than $88,000.

More than 17 scholarships will be awarded to Indigenous students, including the Irene and David Davy, the Gavin Wanganeen, the Aborigines Advancement League and the SA Water scholarships.

“I’m delighted that one of my first official engagements at UniSA is a scholarship ceremony,” Prof Høj said.

“It gives me an opportunity to congratulate new students, encourage those high achievers who are continuing their studies with us and to thank the many wonderful supporters of UniSA, who like me, believe education is one of our most valuable assets."

The UniSA Scholarships and Grants Ceremony will be held in the Basil Hetzel building, Frome Road, UniSA City East Campus from 6.30 pm Thursday June 14, 2007.
