Research in art and design going the distance
Tonight several students will be given the opportunity to undertake their specific research in art and design nationally and globally.
The first South Australian School of Art (SASA) Higher Degree by Research Travel Awards will be presented to three higher degree students specialising in art, visual communication or design.
In aim of enriching the research and learning experience for higher degree students, alumna Helen Stacey initiated the two Travel Awards – the National Travel Award and the International Travel Award – enabling them to undertake research across Australia and overseas.
Sue Kneebone will receive the National Travel Award of $1000 to undertake research in rural Australia.
“I will be relating research to ancestral photos of Yardea Station in the Gawler Ranges area in north-west Australia to investigate how familial and pastoral histories have inscribed themselves onto the landscape by engaging in local stories, myths, histories and memories,” Kneebone said.
Qi Zhang and Gyoko Muratovski will share the International Travel Award of $1500 to undertake research overseas.
Half will assist Zhang’s commute to her hometown of Hei Longjiang China, to collect materials for her research in the visual arts.
“I will use the award to travel back to China and collect silk fabric and specifically designed items of clothing that are made in my hometown,” Zhang said.
Muratovski is using her half of the award to assist a six-month stay in Macedonia to collaborate with the Prime Minister's Office in the area of design research, and corporate and national communication strategies.
Recipients were selected on the significance of their research topic and the potential benefits that that their research may produce.
The SASA Higher Degree of Research Travel Awards will take place Wednesday October 10 at 6.30pm in the Kaurna Building at UniSA’s City West Campus.
