UniSA makes way for teenage entrepreneurs
On
August 12 UniSA will make way for 150 aspiring entrepreneurs from South
Australian high schools as host of the Management Skills Seminar for the
Young Achievement Australia (YAA)
Business Skills Program.
As a prominent South Australian sponsor of the YAA, the University is hosting the seminar to provide skills, advice and mentorship for students who are currently undertaking the program.
The YAA’s Business Skills Program is a unique learning experience which aims to put strategic and innovative entrepreneurial skills into practice over 24 weeks.
It lets the next generation of business people to simulate the creation of a real life organisation in a group of 15 to 25. Each organisation then carries out the processes and tasks of a typical business cycle including:
• Selling shares to raise a capital
• Establishing an organization structure
• Designing a company code of ethics
• Researching, designing and producing goods or services for a
niche market
• Preparing a business plan
• Implementation of a finance, manufacturing, environment, human
resources, sales and marketing system
• Preparation of an annual report
• Returning of capital to shareholders
Throughout the program the organisations are tackling challenges that modern businesses typically confront.
Marketing officer for UniSA’s School of Management, Leda Kalleske, believes the seminar will be a great help to the high school students.
“The Management Skills Seminar will allow students to participate in workshops and work under the mentorship of working business people,” Kalleske said.
“It will arm students with an entrepreneurial tool kit for running and managing their own small business, as well provide assistance and guidance for the remainder of the program.”
“We have arranged for students to hear from some great professional and inspirational guest speakers including National Marketing Manager of Elders Limited, David Mallinson, South Australian Manager of Young Achievement Australia, Mary Magafakis, Young South Australian of the Year, Nick Palousis and UniSA’s Associate Head of School and Program Director for the School of Management, Associate Professor Stephen Boyle,” Kalleske said.
UniSA hopes that the seminar will provide guidance to the organisations whilst nurturing the individual students’ leadership, decision making, negotiation, risk taking, creativity, communication and teamwork skills.
The Management Skills Seminar for the YAA Business Skills Program
will take place at UniSA’s City West Campus in the Hawke building on
Sunday August 12.
