Adelaide awash with educators

Young boy writing at deskThe annual conference of the Australian Association for Educational Research (AARE) brings hundreds of educational researchers from interstate and overseas to Adelaide this week.

With 800 presentations on a wide range of topics, the conference promises to be a busy one for all concerned, with far too many choices to make life easy.

“People can choose from topics as diverse as IT in early childhood to philosophical debates about funding and purposes of schooling, to comparative VET research, to improving teaching standards,” conference convenor Professor Marie Brennan says.

“We have been thrilled with the level of local and international interest in this conference which is the peak educational research conference in Australia. When so much of education is debated through sound-bites rather than evidence, it is really important that we have the opportunity to present findings of research and indicate research in progress.”

Keynote speeches include Professor Fazal Rizvi from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, USA, addressing international education, Professor Maggie MacLure from Manchester University on research methods for uncertain times, and Adelaide’s own Professor Pat Thomson who now holds a Chair at Nottingham University in the UK examining cooperative research between schools and universities.

Five books will also be launched at the conference which is being held at the City East Campus of UniSA and Bonython Hall at the University of Adelaide.

So if you bump into people wandering the streets of Adelaide, they might not be members of the barmy army here for the Ashes, or Kylie fans, but an educational researcher from any of five continents – who might stay on for a concert or a test, or sample the food and wine and tourist delights of South Australia.
