Building garners top awards
UniSA’s Kaurna Building has again been recognised as an architectural
tour de force, this time taking out the prestigious
Sir Zelman
Cowen Award for Public Buildings in the 2006 Royal Australian
Institute of Architects (RAIA) National Architecture Awards.
The building, on the corner of Hindley St and Fenn Place, was designed by John Wardle Architects in association with Hassell and was described by the awards jury as a building of “unique Australian strength of character and idea”.
This latest gong for the Kaurna Building follows first prize in the RAIA SA Chapter’s 2006 Awards of Merit in the categories of New Building and Interior Architecture and its inclusion in the Australian Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale.
According to The Advertiser, RAIA jury chairman Bob Nation likened the building to a “teaching device” for the architecture students who occupy the building with South Australian School of Art students.
The Kaurna Building is part of the University’s $100 million multi-campus Blueprint 2005 plan which is nearing completion with the Landmark Building on North Tce scheduled to open next year.
