UniSA announces Foundation Dean of Law

Professor Paul FairallThe University of South Australia is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Paul Fairall to the position of Foundation Dean of Law in preparation for the University’s first intake of Law students in 2008.

A graduate of the University of Canterbury and the Australian National University, Professor Fairall has been John Bray Professor of Law and Dean of Law at the University of Adelaide since 2002.

He was Professor of Law and Dean of the Law School at James Cook University from 1995 to 2001 and Associate Professor of Law at Bond University from 1991 to 1995.

His first academic appointment was as a senior lecturer at the University of Newcastle. He has written extensively in the area of human rights and criminal law and has undertaken a number of major consultancies, including a major review of the Northern Territory Criminal Code in 2005.

Professor Fairall has held a number of significant offices including the Chair of the Council of Australian Law Deans from 2000 to 2001 and the Chair of Academic Board at James Cook University during the same period.

He is also a foundation Fellow of the recently established Australian Academy of Law and well known to the local profession through his service for the past five years on the Legal Practitioners’ Education and Administration Council chaired by the Chief Justice.
