UniSA showcases student career options like never before

It has been a long time since employers were clamouring at school and university gates to recruit the cream of the crop for their organisations - perhaps 30 years. Stronger economic conditions, the steady ageing of the Australian workforce and the impact of lower birth rates are making it easier to find work and giving graduates more options than they have had for some time.

Harnessing its close connections with industry, UniSA is hosting a Careers Expo at the Adelaide Convention Centre on March 22 from 10.30am which promises to be bigger and better than ever.

The expo brings together a host of employers with students and graduates hoping to begin professional careers.

This year UniSA’s careers expo is double the size with 63 exhibitors taking part, recruiting staff across all fields of study from nursing and allied health, through to business, accounting, engineering, IT, psychology and the arts.

UniSA career services manager, Tony Heinrich, says the expo will be invaluable for students at all stages of their studies and for recent graduates.

“For final year students it is important to note that employers are recruiting right now, so it is not unusual for attendance at the Expo to result in a firm job offer,” Heinrich said.

“Many employers have closing dates as early as April this year for graduate entry positions in 2007. Even students in the second year of their degree program will benefit by investigating the different graduate entry programs available in each of the organisations represented. Many large companies are working a year ahead in terms of recruitment, so information gained now about the whole scene, will be invaluable for students entering their final year of study.”

Heinrich said the Careers Expo had been planned to help students make the career connections they need, and to have a clearer understanding of the link between their studies and their career options.

“Students have more choices than they have had in many years,” he said. “The Expo will allow them to explore how their studies can be applied in the workplace. Often they can be surprised by what employers want and how broadly their degrees can be applied across a range of industries.

“UniSA has strong connections across a broad range of industries and professions and we listen to what they tell us they need from our graduates and the Careers Expo gives our students a chance to find out first hand.”

UniSA will launch its new Career Services website at the expo at 10.30am and just by attending the Expo students will be in the running to win a laptop, i-pods and vouchers for other products and services. Free buses will run every half hour from 10am to 3.30pm for students from UniSA’s Mawson Lakes campus.
