New UniSA Law degree to stem student exodus

The University of South Australia will launch its new Law degree in 2008 filling unmet demand in the state and offering unique opportunities to pursue emerging specialisations such as environmental and water policy law.

Announcing the development of the new degree program, UniSA Pro Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Peter Lee said a number of SA students were missing out on entry into law each year.

“We know there are very bright SA students who are leaving the State to study law elsewhere because there just aren’t enough places and we believe we can fill that demand,” Professor Lee said.

“What is important to understand about the study of law is that it feeds into so many occupations. We are not about graduating a mass of new ‘LA Law’ style criminal lawyers. About 50 per cent of all law graduates move into other professions where they can use their expertise in invaluable ways to advise businesses, industry and government.

“At UniSA we see a real opportunity to develop a synergy between the new Law School and emerging areas of study where legal expertise will be essential - such as water management, sustainable development, and environmental management feeding into some key high growth industries including mining and alternative energy.”

Professor Lee said up to 65 per cent of Law students also elected to do a double degree so there were strong opportunities at UniSA to combine programs such as business or engineering with law.

The new UniSA Law degree will have its first intake of up to 75 students in 2008 and be developed to the standards required for all Australian Law degree programs.
