Park Lands proposals up for discussion

Proposed changes to laws protecting Adelaide’s historic Park Lands will be discussed at a public seminar next week.

Hosted by UniSA’s Centre for Settlement Studies, Louis Laybourne Smith School of Architecture and Design and The Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre, the seminar will examine the history of the Park Lands as well as the proposals in the draft Adelaide Park Lands Bill.

Historian Patricia Sumerling, who has won an Adelaide City Council grant to research the social history of the Park Lands, will talk about how the land has been used and managed in the past.

Russell Starr, who is developing the legislation for the SA Department for Environment and Heritage, will give an overview of the proposals and their aims.

Centre for Settlement Studies member Christine Garnaut said the free seminar was open to anyone interested in the Park Lands and who wanted to comment on the proposed Bill.

“It’s to help the public understand what the scope of the Bill is and what the implications might be for the future management of the Park Lands,” she said.

The event is being held at the Drill Hall in Torrens Parade Grounds, Victoria Drive, from 12pm to 2pm on Tuesday, May 24.
