Indigenous human rights: what are we going to do?

With the focus on a wake up call to the wider South Australian community, over 300 people will attend the University of South Australia next week to discuss the human rights of South Australia’s indigenous communities. Five prominent South Australians will lend their voices to highlight the importance of fundamental rights to health, education, employment and justice.

The Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre and the International Human Rights Day SA Committee are presenting the forum, entitled What are we going to do? A reflection on ways forward for non-Indigenous South Australians to respond to Indigenous South Australian concerns, to be opened by Hawke Centre Patron Professor Lowitja O’Donoghue, and chaired by Leanne Liddle, Aboriginal Parks and Wildlife Co-ordinator, Aboriginal Partnerships Section, Department for Environment and Heritage.

Presentations will be made by:

International Human Rights Day is celebrated on December 10. At last year’s round table, participants from both indigenous and non-indigenous backgrounds looked at the state of Aboriginal Human Rights in South Australia. This year’s round table takes that approach further, aiming to create a strategy to widen the South Australian response to identified needs. The aim of the forum is to bring together viewpoints to inform the round table. The Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre has a strong commitment to ensuring that civil society issues are regularly on the public agenda.
