Thinking on Two Wheels – Exercise for the mind and body
Cycling is fast becoming one of South Australia’s most popular sports – for recreation and fitness, competition and spectatorship.
Supporting this growing trend, UniSA is increasing its participation in the Jacob’s Creek Tour Down Under, now Australia’s most prestigious international cycling event, by hosting a one-day conference Thinking on Two Wheels dedicated to the issues around cycling.
Following the success of this year’s inaugural conference, this innovative one-day event will bring together people from universities, government, business and community groups from across the fields of health, sport and recreation, tourism and sustainable transport.
Based at the Adelaide Hilton Hotel – headquarters to the Tour riders and the Tour Village during the six-day event – the conference will be held on Monday January 16, the day before the start of the 2006 race.
With the call for papers now open, conference convenor Dr Stuart Clement says he welcomes submissions for presentations, seminars and workshops on anything involving cycling.
“Whether people cycle for recreation, competition, to commute or to maintain a healthy lifestyle, cycling benefits our community in many ways,” Dr Clement said.
“The Thinking on Two Wheels cycling conference is an ideal forum to explore the broad range of issues that many people have with cycling in all its forms.
“The conference reflects UniSA’s strong commitment to promoting cycling.
“The University has sponsored a team in the Jacob’s Creek Tour Down Under since 2000 and it actively promotes cycling as a healthy, fun activity that can directly encourage a sustainable transport system and lifestyle.
“UniSA also has a growing group of enthusiasts that participate in the Tour’s recreational ride, the Be Active Tour, and now train all year round for the event.”
