You’re never too old to go Green
Some of the SA’s greatest environmental champions are older – and they would probably say, bolder, because of their years.
Barbara Hardy and John Wamsley are examples of some high profile South Australians dedicated to the environment but there are literally hundreds of others volunteering on weekends for Landcare and Trees for Life, replanting suburban gardens with drought tolerant native species and even dusting off their pushbikes or putting on their walking shoes rather than taking the car to the local shops.
The impacts of global warming, land and river degradation are not wasted on older people because many of them remember greener days when there was less reliance on cars and a lot less pollution.
And older people will have a chance to learn more about the impacts of pollution and environmental degradation and some of the future technologies that will help to prevent further problems when UniSA presents Solar – Wind – Water – the power of our environment as part of its Successful Ageing in Australia free seminar series.
The seminar will be held on Friday September 24 from 2-4pm in the Barbara Hanrahan lecture room level 2 room 9 at UniSA’s City West campus, 70 North Terrace, Adelaide.
Key presenters include director of UniSA’s Sustainable Energy Centre, Associate Professor Wasim Saman who will explore solar energy and its applications in the home in powering air conditioners and home heating systems. He will also look at solar car technology and its impact on the development and refinement of our understanding of solar energy applications. Associate Professor Saman will provide tips on how householders can reduce energy use in the home.
UniSA foundation director of the SA Centre for Water and Science Systems, Associate Professor Bill Richards will look at water conservation in the domestic environment and Tim Sandercock from Delfin Lend Lease will look at building sustainable communities and new housing options for the future.
You can book to attend the free seminar by telephoning Jo Sharp on (08) 8302 0160.
